Birth of the Community Health Centre

Grassroots citizens face more acute or chronic illnesses in their different stages of life. Besides utilizing public Chinese and Western medical services, how to cope with illness and manage their personal health is important. Grassroots often struggle with low-income, long working hours, and limited financial resources. Even though they understand that health is important, they lack the resources to maintain it. Hence, timely primary preventive health education and habitual health exercises are vital. Last but not the least, in the journey of rehabilitation, grassroots citizens often suffer more from medication side-effects, loss of job due to ill-health, etc. Chronic anxiety and helplessness cannot be addressed by a simple “take care”.

The Society for Community Organization (SoCO) has established a community health center in Tsuen Wan District for getting along with grassroots, for disease prevention and health capacity building, which are vital in community health management. Hoping this will help improve health at different levels: individual, family and community and hence enhance quality of life in our population.

Qigong Class

Zhineng Qigong is a scientific, systematic and a holistic healing practice, developed by qigong master Prof. Pang Ming, who is also a practitioner of both Chinese and Western medicine. Building upon the essence of ancient traditional qigong wisdom, Zhineng Qigong integrates modern, scientific, medical, and philosophical insights. Beginning in the 1980s, Prof Pang created a series of qigong methods that are concise, rational, easy to learn, safe, and highly effective, all aligned with the laws of human life and body movement. Etymologically, “智” (zhì) signifies wisdom, referring to the cerebral cortex’s capacity to process external stimuli, while “能” (néng) denotes capability encompassing both mental and physical functions. Zhineng Qigong is a practice designed to cultivate human wisdom and potentials.

Zhineng Qigong was selected as a “Chinese Sports and Fitness Method” in May 1997, ranking first among the 21 qigong methods chosen nationwide. In June 1998, Zhineng Qigong became the first qigong method approved for nationwide promotion by the Fitness Qigong Evaluation Panel and Expert Review Committee of the General Administration of Sport of China. In 2016, it was included in the National Health and Family Planning Commission’s “13th Five-Year Plan” for Traditional Chinese Medicine higher education textbooks. Currently, universities in China offer courses teaching Zhineng Qigong. Benefits of practicing Zhineng Qigong includes enhancing physical health, prolonging healthy life, preventing disease, and upmosting human potential.

Qigong Instant Therapeutic Service

Individuals at the grassroots level often experience anxiety, stress, or depression when coping with illness. Family caregivers also endure prolonged emotional stress. Through qigong conversation, participants can calm down, identify and understand the issues contributing to their distress, enabling them to develop appropriate coping strategies and feel easy to gain necessary support. Prescription on suitable qigong exercises can regulate their physical, psychological and social well-being.

The Center also provides regular Qi (life enery) services in the system of healing, for Qigong students in need.

Personal / Family Health Education

Health awareness via education do help individuals improve and maintain health condition, yet grassroots communities often lack such knowledge and awareness. Through collaboration with voluntary Chinese and Western medicine practitioners, SoCO provides a platform for free health education. Frontline staff and volunteers often engage members’ family or relatives or significant others to participate educational sessions.

To strengthen the family function of grassroots families, SoCO offers courses focused on healthy family communication, aiming from high-conflict relationship to a pause, to a mutual understanding, to a trial restore harmony and to elicit supportive resources within family, overcoming challenges aroused from different illnesses. With care and love and learning, this is mission possible.

Spiritual Healing

The Center offers “multiple intelligences” therapeutic courses for working on stress release. For instance, participants who love music can join music therapy or singing bowls sessions; those who value kinesthetic learning can attend moving-qigong or yoga classes; and nature enthusiasts can participate in gardening therapeutic groups. We start from 1% hope and work on day-by-day small steps progress. Service is co-designed by participants. Everything we do — spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically — has an effect upon our health. Welcome !
